Keeping Traditional Crochet Alive: Meet Anna

Imagine learning a skill as a child and still using it every day decades later.

That's Anna's story.

Growing up in East Lombok, Anna first learned to crochet in elementary school when her mum taught her the basics. What started as an after-school hobby slowly became something much bigger. Years later, those same loops are now woven into every crochet dress we create at Chara Holiday.

Crochet isn't something you can master in a weekend.

Every loop is created by hand. Every pattern takes patience. It's a craft that's traditionally been passed down from one generation to the next, with mothers teaching daughters and families preserving techniques over many decades.

But like many traditional crafts, handmade crochet is becoming increasingly rare.

As fashion has moved towards faster production and lower costs, handmade crochet has often been replaced by machine-made alternatives. While they may look similar from a distance, they can never replicate the time, skill, and human touch behind a garment that's been created one loop at a time.

That's exactly why our crochet collection exists.

We met Anna by chance during the pandemic on Nusa Lembongan. I had always dreamed of creating a crochet collection that felt timeless while celebrating traditional craftsmanship. The moment I saw Anna's work, I knew she'd be the person to bring that vision to life.

Today, most of our crochet dresses begin with Anna.

There are no machines doing the work behind the scenes. No production line. Just Anna, her crochet hook, years of experience, and thousands of carefully formed loops that slowly transform yarn into a finished dress.

It's a slower way of creating, and that's exactly the point.

At Chara Holiday, we're not interested in making the fastest product possible. We'd much rather create something that brings joy -  with a story, knowing who made it, how it was made, and the hours of dedication behind every piece.

When you choose one of our crochet dresses, you're supporting far more than a beautiful dress.

Each dress purchased by you, is celebrated with a happy dance by Anna and our team. And thats the beauty of something made with love.

We're incredibly proud to work alongside Anna, and we hope that we'll continue to create many beautiful collections together.
